South Africa remains firmly committed to the United Nations and the Human Rights Council and will do its part to ensure that the organ continues to serve as a beacon of hope. That is the view of the country’s Ambassador to Geneva where the Council is based, after the dramatic withdrawal of the United States from the human rights body. Washington’s top diplomat and its UN Ambassador cited the Councils lack of reforms, the composition of its membership and what they termed “its chronic bias towards Israel” to justify the decision to withdraw from the Council. The United States has announced it is withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council saying the organisation is “not worthy of its name.” American Ambassador to the U.N Nicky Haley says she made clear her country would only stay in the council if what she calls “essential reforms were achieved.”
